Smith Studios was created in the summer of 2001.  The Studio, located at 90 Poplar Drive in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, was established as a recording facility to further the development of aspiring musicians.  Creator and owner Jeremy J. Smith envisioned a full scale recording studio to record his and other original works.  Soon his studio grew to meet the needs of other musicians in Mt. Lebanon and the Pittsburgh area seeking quality recording services for themselves.

As sound engineer of Smith Studios, Jeremy Smith is personally involved in every job.  He designs the microphone schemes, physically mixes, and masters every recording himself.  The studio is a very small space intended for multi-track recording, small groups, or the solo musician.  The space is acoustically fit for all types of instruments.  With adjustable dampening materials, the room is never too dead or too live.  For larger groups and ensembles, Smith Studios goes on location to a concert hall, or any other setting you could request.  Smith Studios also will record concerts and other live events, as well as provide live sound reinforcement for any occasion.

Jeremy Smith is a qualified and experienced sound engineer.  He mixed sound for MTLTV Live, a local cable television show, was the sound engineer for the Mt. Lebanon High School Holiday Show, has recorded numerous private CDs, and he recorded the Mt. Lebanon High School Concert Choir.  Jeremy has also edited and mastered several other recordings for numerous musical groups.  As a musician who plays and teaches both percussion and piano constantly, and a perfectionist, Jeremy's work is very musical and sensible.

Smith Studios records primarily onto a computer dedicated to audio recording, but also uses a hard disc recorder, and mini disc to capture audio.  Sound is mixed using Behringer equipment, and Smith Studios uses Audio Technica, Nady Audio, Sampson, and Shure microphones.  Smith Studios endorses Behringer equipment.

Several software programs are used to record live audio at Smith Studios.  These include Logic Audio Platinum 4.6.1, N-Track Studio, and Sonar 1.0.  Every recording is mastered through CakeWalk's Sonar 1.0, a digital multi-recording package that combines digital audio, MIDI, editing, and effects into one package.  This program is a self-contained recording studio on the computer, and is comparable to Pro Tools.

To aid in graphic layout, Avery Media Software, MediaFACE II, and Adobe Photoshop 7.0 are used.  These programs are used to create original jewel case literature, and is part of Smitty's Music Publishing Co., Inc.

Smith Studios records in both digital and analog formats.

Multi-Track Recording:

The first of two methods used to record music in Smith Studios is that of multi-track recording.  This is a process by which every instrument, voice, or patch of a song is recorded separately from the others.  This is the preferred method of recording because it results in the studio engineer having complete control over every instrument when he begins to master the recording.

For example, if the song to be recorded has a piano and a vocalist on it, the piano will be recorded by itself first.  The pianist will play the part, and it will be recorded into the first track of this song on the computer.  Then the vocalist will sing while listening to the piano part in a set of headphones, and the vocalist will be recorded into the second track of this song on the computer.  Now the levels for each can be adjusted individually, and effects can be added to individual parts.

Live Recording:

The second of two methods used to record in Smith Studios is live recording.  This is simply when all the parts, voices, or patches of a song are played and recorded at one time into a stereo track on the computer.  Using this method, all of the levels have to be set perfectly at the time of recording.  Once the recording has concluded, there is no way to adjust individual parts, or add or change specific instruments or sounds.

This method is used more frequently, because it is more practical due to time commitments.  It takes a lot more preparation though than multi-track recording.  You can achieve a quality product with either method you choose.  Also, if you are planning to play more than one part or instrument in a song, multi-track recording can be of great service to you.
